Viruses and Windows 7

Postby bradkg » Mon Mar 29, 2010 18:55

So I got infected with a fake.alert virus on saturday. I restored my computer but now it does wierd things like turn the sound up at random times, random shut down, and all sorts of fun things. After spending 5 or so hours trying to fix it this weekend I am now left with two options. Format and upgrade to windows 7, or call the geek squad (or similar service) and have them try and fix it.

I'm leaning toward upgrading but I was wanting to know if anyone had any problems with upgrading from vista to 7 or if anything else I should know?

If you have/had a virus, I've found the best way is a full format and just start from scratch.

That said, the Windows 7 upgrade actually does work, you get a fresh installation of Win 7 just doing the upgrade process. If you buy "Windows 7 Upgrade" you actually have to do this, I couldn't install from a freshly formatted drive, I had to install Win XP/Vista first and then let it upgrade. If you install from XP, it wipes everything, if you install from Vista, it will keep your settings like wallpaper and such.

as the last pwn2own showed, its not that macs are any more secure its just that no one even bothers to try to virus them. why waste time designing viruses for 4% of the market share when you can hit 93% instead?

anyway, what OS are you running? there are virus removal instructions that will work if you use them. can you give any further info on which virus it is? there are several strains of fake.alert

Well I run vista but I don't know which strain I have. It was very frustrating as I use Bitdefender as my antivirus, and after it found it, it said every file that was active was the virus and quarantined all the files; thus causing my computer to crash, system restore, and now a jacked up computer.

I have tried an un-quarantined all the files and run the antivirus again. The one time I got it to scan all the way through it didn’t find the virus again. After the next crash, all the files returned to the quarantine. I uninstalled the antivirus after removing from quarantine but it crashed during the uninstall so I now I can’t start the antivirus or try and uninstall it.
It makes me sad :(. Looks like a Windows 7 Upgrade is what I am going to need.

Take a look at your anit-virus software.. most good AV software offer some kind of Guarantee if your computer is infected by something they cant catch. It might not hurt to give them a call and tell them what happed.

Maybe they can offer some kind of fix.

Windows 7 is only about a million times better than vista, so dont fret about the upgrade itself.

alternatively, get AVG it is free and should be able to get things sorted out.

Macs give a dangerous false sense of security, most users don't bother with anti-virus at all as they assume it's not necessary. Apple is also notorious for taking months to do updates for their software and/or OS.

I found Vista SP1 to be pretty decent Kyle, but I agree, Win7 is much, much improved.
