Beta is a testing stage for a game before it's officially released on store shelves.
The idea is that people play the beta, report the issues back to the developer and they get them fixed before the game is released. The more people playing the beta, the more feedback you have and the better idea that you have that the game is ready.

Often, after a beta there will be a release candidate tested - which is basically the developer saying "OK, we've got all the problems addressed, we think this is ready to be released but we want to make sure there are no more issues".

Before the beta is the Alpha stage, that's essentially the part where all the components of the game have just been put together like the graphics, sound, interface, etc - sometimes it's playable, sometimes not. Alpha stages usually aren't made public.

So I tried 2 games as Terran. I'm not sure going into vs player right away is good for me lol. First game I remembered too late how to do advanced buildings, so alll along I was "how do I make siege tanks and starships!"
